Venezuela 4--after thought: Benny Hinn
In my last post I mentioned the temptation one feels to put on a bigger production which allows you to see the results of your work, instead of doing it by faith. Speaking of...
On our last morning in Venezuela, I learned that Benny Hinn managed to send an email to just about every pastor in the country, to recruit them for some big production he's putting on soon. Two out of the four non-staff elders in the church which hosted our Workshop even received it. Apparently, Hinn has already managed to secure 1000 pastors just for the choir.
What in the world? Thabiti, weren't you saying something about all the talk we do about intellectual movements like the Emerging Church, when the real scary and massive phenomenon is this prosperity gospel stuff?

This is my frustration in reformed circles. We are not addressing the health and wealth movement. The prosperity gospel is the largest, fastest growing and most infuential movement in the US and it is spreading like wildfire in third world countries. I emailed Piper when I first heard of the Power of words conference and pleaded that they somehow address that the biggest proponents of the "power of words" are the charismatic preachers. I could say much more, but I'll leave at this for now.

I heartily agree with the previous comment. H&W is the white elephant in the room. We need to be addressing the near global domination of media such as TBN and their ilk. As a nerdy armchair reformed theologian myself, I nevertheless recognize that many problems we (correctly) assess are but a drop in the pond in comparison to others. And Emergent vs. H&W would be a great example. Emergent teaching/theology is already waning and was hardly ever cohesive or mainstream. H&W has many tens of millions of adherents worldwide who espouse it to greater or lesser degrees. And it will be something we have to counter in missionary efforts. All this to say...let's make sure we keep focusing on the main things as the main things.
