Rejoice in the wife of your youth: A Do-It-Yourself Marriage Retreat (or Date Night)

by Ryan Townsend

The week before Christmas, my sweet wife and I got away for two nights to downtown Indy for our annual marriage retreat. It was two of the best days of my year. God has blessed me with a wonderful, omni-competent wife who lives her life with strength and dignity. And we're very different. We've been married over 5 years now, and God has used these retreats as a key instrument of sanctification, encouragement, and growth in our marriage.

The past couple of years, we have used a simple marriage-retreat document that Deepak Reju put together. It has three parts/sessions: Session 1 remembers the past and our God of Providence; Session 2 focuses on personal discipleship and relationship with one another; Session 3 looks at Work-Family-Ministry Balance.

So, at the beginning of this new year, or on your next anniversary, or even over dinner on your next date night, print off this document and enjoy the glorious, joyful, hard work and pleasure that comes in building a biblical marriage!

Ryan - I really appreciate the link for the Marriage Retreat. I've been married 17 years and shamefully the thought of this type of "getting away" never occurred to me. I'll be starting a Young Marrieds class soon in my church and would like to use this pdf file in conjunction with that. Is that okay? Thanks for the post!

Mark - Sure it is okay to use this with the class. You might also want to contact CHBC to get a draft of the marriage Sunday school class that has been taught for a number of years by the CHBC elders. It would be useful for your young married's Sunday school class.
